The Golden Hour

Taking photos at midday isn’t the best time to take photos. But of course, we already knew that! So what’s the best time to take photos during the day? Well, that’s what’s known as the Golden Hour.

1. What exactly is the Golden Hour?

The Golden Hour is the first and last hour of sunlight during the day, when everything is bathed in a soft glowing, golden light. During this time, contrast of colours, the darkness of shadows and overexposure of highlights is strongly reduced, giving the scene an overall softness that is often considered desirable.

2. How do I determine the Golden Hour for my location?

Head to suntoday.org (see picture below) and enter the name of your city or town in the location box. At the bottom of the screen you’ll immediately see the progress of the sun throughout the day with the golden hours for your location identified by upright yellow bars. Hover over these bars to see the start and end times of your golden hours.
