How to create bonusprint wall art like an expert

Here at bonusprint, we don’t see empty walls — we see blank canvases for your awesome photos. Our wall art suits every room and space and ranges from multi-photo layouts and photos printed on large aluminium to canvas pieces. If you’re not sure which wall art will work best for you, check out our guide below.

Which wall art material should you use?

The first step to creating your wall art is to decide which material you should print your photos on.

One of the main things to keep in mind is what you think will suit your photo best. Canvas has a warm and cosy look and feel to it, so is a perfect choice for photos of the family. If you’ve been getting back to nature and capturing all the vibrant shades that it has to offer, then mounted prints are pretty awesome for displaying intense colours with a matt finish. Our aluminium wall art can be the ideal choice for black and white images — a great choice for any dramatic, contemporary or graphic shots. If you want a luxury finish with a brilliant shine, we’d say that acrylic is the way to go — it’s a favourite amongst photographers.

You should also have a think about the textures and surfaces in your image, as these can also influence which wall art material you choose. Acrylic is a great way to enhance a reflection. A photo of the stunning orange leaves of an autumnal tree reflected in a river would look great on acrylic, whereas canvas would be best for an image of your family having fun in the snow, or your little ones cuddled on the sofa with a roaring wood burner in the background. Idyllic.

How to choose the right wall art format

You can choose between square, landscape, or portrait for your wall art, so think about the type of photo you’re printing before you start creating. Square formats are ideal for macro shots, or extreme close-ups that draw attention to specific details. They’re also great for any camera pics you might have shot in a square mode for social media.

Landscape wall art is perfect for those pics you might have taken of the frosty countryside on an early morning hike, and portrait is best for the photos of your favourite people getting cosy in the house this winter.

Will the style of your image match the style of your room?

To make your wall art look extra-professional, think about how your photography style will fit in with your interiors. Do you want to go for intense colours that contrast with your walls, or would you rather use an image that blends in and complements your décor?

If you want to tweak your images to suit your space, you could change the tones a little with editor software beforehand. Making your photo black and white would match a monochrome room, or if you’d prefer a bright and bold look, have a play around with filters or increase the colour saturation of your image. That will give your snaps a cartoony or pop art feel.

The way you crop your image can also have an impact on your space. If you’ve taken pictures of great looking buildings on your travels, you can crop them to give the impression of extra height in a space. So when you’re editing a photo of a tall structure, try cropping your image so it works in a portrait wall art format rather than landscape.

Get creative with layouts

As well as the colours and the formats you use, layouts are also a great way of reflecting your style. Our mosaic grids are perfect for lots of family photos – you can fit up to 81 pics on just one grid. They’re also ideal for printing out the best bits from your Instagram in the style of your feed. Why not fill the mosaic grid with shots from the past 12 months, starting with January and moving through the year chronologically. It’s a brilliant way to document this most unique of years.
